Elder Gay and his wife spoke to all the missionaries at a special meeting Sunday evening. Monday, they toured many of the Nauvoo sites. Ann had the privilege of taking Elder Gay, his wife and President Gilliland through the Brigham Young Home.
Elder Gay and President Gilliland stopped in at the Cabinet Shop while I was working there. They wanted to see what we were doing there.
Our weekly mission training meeting was changed from Wednesday morning to Tuesday morning so that Elder Gay could talk to us and answer questions about what is happening in the Church.
One of the parts that impressed Ann and me was the stories they told about the problems and struggles their family was having and how blessed they were because he gave up a very successful business career to serve as a mission president and how the Lord took care of the family problems. He said that all of us come on missions with family burdens or problems. There's never a convenient time to go on a mission. He said all of us as well as our families are blessed when we serve missions. He referred to D&C 31:5 which reads:
"Therefore, thrust in your sickle with all your soul, and your sins are forgiven you, and you shall be laden with sheaves upon your back, for the laborer is worthy of his hire. Wherefore, your family shall live."
Another thought that stuck with us is that as missionaries we have multiple missions. We know that our mission is to invite others to come unto Christ. However, he said that "others" includes each other. We are to lift one another and to continually invite each other (everyone) to come unto Christ.
